Who do Symbols help?
Symbols can help anybody who has difficulty with text
There are many people in society who may have difficulty reading:
- Children learning to read
- People with Special Educational Needs
- People with poor education
- People with cognitive impairments
- Overseas visitors who do not speak the local language
- Migrants and immigrant people
People with recognised learning disabilities:
- There are around 210,000 people with severe learning difficulties who need significant help with their daily living.
- There are a further 1.2 million people who have mild or moderate learning disabilities, which usually means they will be able to live independently, but with support.
People for whom English text presents challenges
- There are large numbers of people for who English is a second, non-fluent language.
- According to the Basic Skills Agency some 80% of the prison population have literacy or numeracy difficulties.
- 17% of all adults in England have some measure of difficulty with reading.
