Symbols to support communication

The Picture Communication Symbols (PCS) from Mayer-Johnson, were developed to support Alternative and Augmentative Communication (AAC). They are used in communication books and on devices internationally. The PCS symbols are most frequently associated with the Boardmaker Software Family, however from 2007 Add-on packs will be available for the Communicate Series.

The Symbol Debate:
Which Set is Right for You?

Tina Voizey, Widgit Software, SEN Product Consultant
Martin Fisher, Mayer-Johnson, SEN Product Consultant

A Tough Question.

Many symbol sets are commercially available, but with so much choice we have to ask ourselves some questions:

What am I using symbols to achieve?
Which set is most appropriate?
Should I stick with one set or can I mix 'n' match?

A Brief History of Symbols

The Widgit Literacy Symbols (WLS - previously know as Widgit Rebus Symbols) have developed over the last 20 years from a set of 600 symbols to over 8,000 images, covering a vocabulary of over 30,000 words. The WLS set careful design, consistency and structure are used to illustrate a single concept, without adding unnecessary information. Its strength, therefore, is in supporting the development of literacy skills and the use of text by those whose experience of text is limited.

The Picture Communication Symbols (PCS) are a database of 10,000 symbols developed by Roxie and Terry Johnson in the USA. They are used worldwide by Speech and Language Therapists and in Special Education for expressive and receptive, face-to-face communication resources including communication books, visual schedules, calendars, prompts, behavioural tools and in low and high tech communication devices.
