ProxTalker

Communication Supported with Widgit Symbols

The Logan ProxTalker is a portable device that allows children and adults with a range of communication impairments to have a voice, by exchanging symbols for words.

The ProxTalker was developed by Glen Dobbs of Logan Technologies, with his friend and colleague Kevin Miller, for his 12-year-old son who is autistic and has no speech. Glen wanted to help his son to communicate verbally, and there was nothing on the market that he felt was easy enough for him to use and robust enough to withstand the rough handling he knew he would give it. By developing the Logan ProxTalker, Glen gave his son a ‘voice’, and enabled him to do things such as order his own meals and ‘speak’ on the telephone.

The Logan ProxTalker works by the user selecting a small square tag which displays a symbol illustrating a single word or concept, from a standard set of 80 pre-made symbol tags. By placing this tag on a button on the device and then pressing it down, the device will say the appropriate word aloud. The device has five buttons, allowing the user to string five words together to construct a sentence, as well as communicate individual words. The ProxTalker also comes with 20 blank sound tags, which can be personalised with your own recordings of chosen words.

The Logan ProxTalker is compatible with Widgit Symbols, giving the perfect opportunity for a Widgit Symbol user to utilise familiar symbols in verbal communication.
