How symbols help
You don't have to have a learning difficulty to benefit enormously from symbols. Symbols are used around us all the time in everyday life, from instructions in how to use a new appliance, to signs in foreign airports.
A symbols represents a concept and is easier to interpret than text.
Introducing
Symbols
Children, and older learners with low literacy,
will be motivated by coloured symbols. These draw attention to key
concepts in the text and can help develop early vocabulary. The
PCS symbols are ideal at this level of writing and in communication
books.
Reinforcing
Concepts
At the next level of literacy, the Widgit Rebus Symbols
reinforce language by the visual prompt for prepositions, categories,
negatives and many other grammatical structures. Seeing words illustrated
makes the text more meaningful and easier to remember.
Independent
Writing
On-screen grids and environments give
access to words, symbols and phrases. These help structure writing
in the first steps towards literacy and greater independence. Activities
contained within Writing with Symbols encourage word building, sentence
construction, communication and free writing.
