<empty>Writing with Symbols 2000 version 2.6

Writing with Symbols 2000 is a language, literacy and communication tool that uses symbols, speech and activities to help anyone read and write.

What can it do?

At its simplest Writing with Symbols is a word processor that automatically illustrates the words as you type. But that is only the start...

For Schools

Writing with Symbols 2000 can give extensive support to written language, helping writers see the meaning of words.

It can help to explain the differences between

  • words that look the same (saw saw, spell spell)
  • words that sound the same (hair hare, pear pair)
  • as well as giving language support (drink drink, run ran, loud loudest)

It can help many other aspects of language development where images can assist understanding.

differences

Symbols enable curriculum activities
where a student's limited text skill would otherwise hold them back.

adult enabling

Adult Learners - enabling involvement

Symbols aid understanding, which can increase involvement, choice and confidence. Adults use symbols for information signs, minutes of meetings, agendas, personal plans, study records and illustrating basic skills such as washing and other domestic tasks.

For those moving away from their family home, symbols can help gain an understanding of change, and of how other people can be of help. For using money, shopping, catching a bus, or writing to family and friends, supporting text with symbols helps comprehension and gives consistency.

The program is supplied with two extensive sets of graphics images (symbols) to support the writing: the coloured PCS symbols from Mayer-Johnson, which are ideal for younger learners and for motivating early readers, and the Widgit Rebus symbols which are systematically constructed to enhance learning and to develop language understanding. And, of course, you can add your own pictures or photographs.
