Many children find it hard to relate question words to the information connected with them! By asking - or responding to - a set of fixed questions (which can be used in any order), familiarity will grow. The information relates to the essentials required for introducing a story, and each card can be the starting point for relating a tale, which can be very simple or more developed.

Practising these narrative skills has been shown to improve expressive language in general.

This pack contains four sets of cards for one-to-one work with a student, for games with two students or in small groups.

  2. Use the logic cards. One partner picks a card. The other uses their cards, spread out on the table, to ask questions. Try to encourage good language and precise thinking.
  3. Use the story framework to make up a short story about the events and items in the card.
  4. Follow-up activities: Use the cards to describe 'Spot the difference', play 'Pairs' games where they must make exact matches.

Print the card pages on to thick paper to make them more durable.
