 Problem

Speech not working - IE program crashes when trying to speak or just doesn't speak.

 Solution

Some speech programs install certain speech files to the Windows\System directory rather than their own application directory. This can cause other programs that use speech to stop working. This fax tells you how to identify the programs causing the problem and then how to move the files. You (a) need to change the names of the speech files in Windows\system and (b) then identify which program(s) do not work then (c) move the speech files into the application directory and rename them back again.

(a) How to rename the FBV files in windows system.

The files are called :

In Win3.1 Load the File Manager. Look in the C:\Windows\System directory for the above files. When you have found them you can rename them as follows. Click on the file to rename, from the File menu, click Rename, you will be prompted to type in the new filename. Rename the files as follows :

FBVSPCH.DLL rename to FBVSPCHX.DLL
FBVTIMER.DLL rename to FBVTIMERX.DLL
FBVNGN.EXE rename to FBVNGNX.EXE

In Win95 : Double Click on MY Computer to view your hard disks. From here Double Click on (C:) to view the contents of your c: drive. There should be a folder named Windows, Double Click on this to open it. You will now need to DC on the System folder. Within System there will be the above files. You may need to scroll to find them. When you have found them you should rename them , by clicking with the right mouse button on the file and choosing rename, and rename the as follows :

FBVSPCH.DLL rename to FBVSPCHX.DLL
FBVTIMER.DLL rename to FBVTIMERX.DLL
FBVNGN.EXE rename to FBVNGNX.EXE

Renaming these files will mean that the program that installed them there will no longer run .

(b) Use your programs that use speech and find the one that was working and now is not. You then identify the application directory for that program by:

In Win3.1 When you have established which program does not now run speech , you will need to copy the files, that you have just renamed, from the Windows\System directory into the same directory that the application EXE file resides. (c) You will then need to rename these files, in the application directory, back to their original file names (IE removing the X). Repeat This process with any applications that are now not working with speech.

In Win95 : When you have established which program does not now run speech , you will need to copy the files, that you have just renamed, from the Windows\System directory into the same directory that the application EXE file resides. (c) You will then need to rename these files, in the application directory, back to their original file names (IE removing the X). Repeat This process with any applications that are now not working with speech. If you are unsure of any of the above then please contact Widgit. If possible when you phone us try to be by the computer you are working on, as we will then be able to talk you through the process.
