Program does not load past the splash screen
Problem 1: After trying to start SymWriter, it gets as far as the splash screen, and the text in the bottom left of the splash screen reads "Registering Application". It then hangs and you have to use the task manager to kill it.
Problem 2:
After trying to start SymWriter, it gets as far as the splash screen, and the text in the bottom left of the splash screen reads "Starting Speech". It then hangs and you have to use the task manager to kill it.
Solution 1
REASON:
This happens after SymWriter crashes and leaves the Communicate Bridge in an undefined state. You can tell if this has happened because, whilst SymWriter is NOT running, there is the 3-coloured boxes icon in their system tray, which does not disappear when the user hovers their mouse over it.
FIX:
Restarting the PC will fix this problem, but there is a quicker way:
If the user goes to their task manager, clicks on the "Processes" tab, selects
"clbridge.exe" from the list and clicks "End Process". Click OK to confirm against the
warning that appears (making sure it is clbridge that they clicked on!).
After this, if the user moves the mouse over the 3-colour icon in the system tray, it should disappear. If this is the case, the next time they try and run SymWriter, it should start normally.
Solution 2
REASON:
Some machines can have a registry entry that refers to an older speech engine that has been upgraded during the installation process. The newer engine can be used in place of the old one, but trying to start them both at the same time causes the program to hang.
FIX:
Download and run the tool below, following the on-screen instructions.
After running the tool, SymWriter should start normally, and you should have access to all your normal speech voices. If SymWriter still does not start, or you do not have access to all your voices, please contact Tech Support.
