Effective Teaching and Learning for Pupils with Learning Difficulties

Enabling Access cover

This edition has been extensively revised and updated in line with the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority guidelines on teaching children with severe and complex learning needs. The widely experienced editors and contributors to this book:

This book looks at the many ways in which pupils in schools can be helped to access the full curriculum to which they are entitled. The contributors are all expert practitioners who bring a wealth of knowledge to the field. In this book, there are examples of pupils with severe learning difficulties using symbols in French. The authors show that this is not patronising, but can give the pupils a real means of involvement.

The symbols in Rebus 1 (The basic Collection) have been given a French word list for using in Writing with Symbols on the PC. This is being used by schools to give their pupils access to the Modern Foreign Languages Curriculum. With the wordlist comes a French Speech module, which gives the correct pronunciation.

An overlay made for a communication aid has overlays with symbols with the French text underneath. The device is "programmed with simple French phrases which pupils with communication problems or less confident pupils can produce by touching the appropriate part of the overlay". Work sheets have been made using the same symbol collection used in Writing with Symbols, which pupils can complete either on the computer or as paper based activities.
