Mayer Johnson - Is a company which focuses on augmentative communication. Their catalogue is over 50 pages in size with over 170 products. There are now approximately 8,000 individual picture symbols available in many different formats. They have been translated into many languages and are being developed constantly. Software continues to be an important part of the company's product line. Also included now are hardware items such as switches, touchscreens and speech devices.

Makaton Vocabulary Development Project - Makaton is a language programme. It comprises a small core vocabulary, and a large resource vocabulary. Makaton is used with manual signs, graphic symbols and speech. Makaton was designed 20 years ago by Margaret Walker a speech and language therapist. The Makaton programme offers a method of communication and encourages the development of language and literacy skills for children and adults with communication difficulties.

Room 5's Autism Page - Included in both the autism list and in using symbols. It has excellent examples and advice on making and creating visual schedules, timetables and communication books. Includes helpful photographs.

Do 2 Learn - A web site providing learning activities to promote independence in children and adults with special learning needs. Some excellent examples of using symbols to help students learn and develop learning and communication.

AAC Intervention - This site is full of interesting and useful information regarding aided and augmentative communication and includes therapy ideas to develop learning and communication through AAC.

Simplified Technology - Selected Links to Assistive Technology and Augmentative Communication Resources for Children with Disabilities with some nice basic information and help tips on using various AAC devices.

SNOW (Special Needs Opportunity Windows - Augmentative Communications. This includes some nice basic information about AAC, including low tech and high tech information.

PECS UK - Information about the Picture Exchange Communication Scheme (PECS) from the UK site. Recommended because this is where to start finding out about PECS, which has been such a useful tool in helping some children learn to communicate, when other approaches have not been successful in the past.
