Growing and Learning (about sexual health) is a series of books that have been written to support the parents and carers of young people with learning disabilities.

The books have been written by Jane Keeling who is a registered family planning nurse and sexual health educator and trainer. Jane's youngest son, Simon, has autism and severe learning difficulties, and throughout the books Jane talks about difficulties and challenges her own family has faced, and will continue to face.

She offers ideas, support, information and guidance for families, which have been gathered over many years from a combination of her personal and professional experience.

The books have been written in a friendly relaxed style 'parent to parent' style and there are personal anecdotes which it is hoped will encourage others. The books can also be used by professionals working in the field.

What does each pack contain?
All three ring bound books are contained within a clear plastic wallet. Within each wallet there is a selection of Widgit communication symbols (in card format) and within book one there are also additional card illustrations. Widgit Software have offered support throughout the design process. Basic guidance information is repeated within all three books so that parents and carers can use each book as an individual work pack. E.g. a school could use the pack with three families at once.

Book One covers:
Puberty and body changes
Keeping safe, what is private?
Personal hygiene
Using public and private toilets

Book Two (Male edition) covers:
Introduction to the male body
Wet Dreams
Private Touching (male masturbation)

Book Three covers:
Introduction to the female body
Starting periods
Private Touching (female masturbation)

Issues covered within each book are:

Guidance, tips and support for parents and carers
The importance of teaching children and young people with a learning disability about sexuality and sexual health issues
Information and support about working with young people with communication difficulties
Advice about using communication symbols and visual learning methods
Information for parents and carers of young people with an autism spectrum diagnosis

What methods are used?

Ideas and activities e.g. games, routines, step by step instructions
Additional activities and methods to use with young people with more severe communication difficulties
Clear illustrations in both a 'realistic' style and also comic book style stories with text and symbol
Card copies of selected Widgit Literacy symbols

The set of all three books can be purchased for £65 (plus P+P)
