SymbolWorld is a website dedicated to people who use symbols. It has material for all ages and includes personal contributions, stories and learning materials.
eLive is an on-line magazine within SymbolWorld especially for older readers.
The information on SymbolWorld is supported by the Widgit Literacy Symbols (previously know as Rebus), and is created using Writing with Symbols 2000 v 2.6 and Communicate: In Print 2.
SymbolWorld is designed to have clear easy navigation with large buttons for any links.
Widgit has created a new Web Browser, Communicate: Webwide. If you have Webwide you can hear all the articles and stories on SymbolWorld read out.
Most common Screen readers do not read the alt tags in a webpage, so unfortunately do not work with symbol rich sites.
1. My World – Personal contributions from individuals and groups.
2. Stories - Stories aimed at all ages, including older readers
3. Learning – A range of non-fiction material covering personal skills for all ages, such as making a cup of tea. Most of the learning material has general appeal to a wider range of symbol readers, but many of which have curriculum application as well.
4. eLive is a monthly magazine for older readers. It has eight sections each month covering news, film revies, profiles, recipies, feature articles, how to's and jokes. Readers can also access all the past issues from the index page.
The News section covers between 6 and 8 news items each month and can be a valuable resource to stimulate discussion. Because this is a monthly publication the news items are selected to be of general interest rather than time specific.
The film reviews cover old and new films that fall within the UK defined U to 15 categories.
Most of the materials in these sections are sent in by symbol users, their parents or teachers.
| Students at Ganton School are regular contributors
to SymbolWorld. their teacher Vivian writes: They all enjoy using the internet. their favourite site is SymbolWorld because it is bright and colourful and they can navigate the site easily. Most importantly, they can understand what's written because of the symbols. |
Why don't you become a contributor? It can be very rewarding for students to to see their own ideas published on the web.
You can send material in any form. Things don't need to be perfect; we can tidy them up.
