Grey Tones
Sometimes it is necessary to draw attention to a specific part of a
symbol. The original Rebus symbols used small arrows, but this was often
confusing and added to the visual clutter of the images. Instead, we
have introduced the use of colour and shading. There has been a lot
of difficulty in previous use of an indicating arrow to draw attention
to a certain part of a symbol. This has been replaced by the use of
a grey fill or occasionally a thick line. In general thick lines work
fine when the symbols are printed large, and reproduce quite well from
a laser printer. However these do not show well on screen unless in
large sizes. The fill is much clearer.

Arrows
There are several different uses of arrows. These are being standardised
as follows:
1. A small straight arrow with small head for indicating (empty, bottom,
every)
2. A thick arrow indicating movement direction (down, along, climb up,
out)
3. A curved arrow with thin line for something happening(change, and
do as 'I am going to do the washing'.
See section on Make, Work and Do for more discussion on this vocabulary.
Negatives
It was decided to introduce colour for negatives. These print well,
with the colour element looking grey in print.
The 'not' element is standardised, but when used within a symbol only the diagonal line is used and not the circle. It is only intended to include common negatives and relevant contractions (don't, etc) . Others can be made with the two words.
