Education
These symbols are based on the original concept for teacher of a person
using a whiteboard to demonstrate/explain, and teach or class being
the teacher with a group of students.
There is also the concept of teach which is not school based, but in a more general sense, in which case this uses the speech with 'idea out' i.e. saying one's idea or giving information.

Subjects are represented by the group element to denote the group of ideas on this topic, thus distinguishing between a globe and geography. The lessons - such as art lesson are shown by the two words and in spoken/written language.
Learn
After much debate it was decided to omit the pointing finger from the
learn/think set of symbols. The original symbol emulated the sign, with
the hand to the forehead. Users were offended by this (Paveley 1999)
and the hand was moved to the chin to try to indicate somebody thinking.
This has never been regarded as entirely satisfactory. The new symbol
uses the think bubble with the face. An arrow in or out to show 'learn'
or recall/remember. Elements in the bubble to qualify the thinking.

The most controversial symbol to develop is one for learning difficulty. The symbol illustrated here shows thinking with the 'difficult' element of the question mark and exclamation marks together. This has not yet been tested with users.
