How Coleg Gwent supports transition from secondary to college with Widgit Symbols
Empowering learners through inclusive communication, staff training, and symbol-supported resources across further education


Coleg Gwent is one of Wales’ leading further education colleges, serving learners across a range of campuses. To support students with additional learning needs and enhance inclusive practice, Autism Coach Rhys Lewis has been working in partnership with Widgit to integrate symbols into their transition and learning support strategies.
Transitioning from secondary school to college is a significant step for any learner, and for students with additional needs, it can be particularly daunting. Coleg Gwent recognised the importance of clear, accessible communication and sought to make their transition materials more inclusive and supportive.


Through a collaborative research project with Rhys and Widgit, we investigated how symbols can support young people transitioning into further education. This work led to key developments in the college’s approach across the following areas:
- Updated transition booklet
Based on learner and research feedback, the college updated its transition booklet to improve accessibility and clarity. The enhanced booklet, incorporating Widgit Symbols, provides comprehensive guidance on college life, support services, and practical considerations – all through a visual and inclusive lens. - Staff training and internal rollout
A new e-learning package was developed to introduce staff to Widgit software and the benefits of symbol use. Piloted with a group of staff, the training is currently being translated into Welsh, with plans to roll it out college-wide.

During a recent Estyn Thematic Review, Rhys was invited by an Assistant Principal to showcase how the college is using symbols to support learners. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with inspectors expressing a desire to see even wider adoption of symbols across the college.
Coleg Gwent’s use of Widgit Symbols is a powerful example of how inclusive communication tools can ease the transition to college and help all learners feel more confident, supported, and prepared for further education.
